Covid-19: Social impact funding you might miss – 14 Aug update
The list of Covid-19 emergency funding for social enterprises is a challenge to navigate, and easy to miss out. In this regular update, we search through the opportunities to highlight our top pick of emergency grants, loans and other funding sources with deadlines approaching or which you may not have noticed. The list below is divided into international and UK/Ireland funds.

For organisations worldwide
Seoul Innovation QuickFire Challenge: Healthcare for the New Normal (Global)
Deadline: 31 August
For ideas for potential healthcare solutions in the post-Covid era (health technologies, e-health platforms, rapid diagnostics for rare diseases, etc.). Up to KRW150m (~ US$125,000) will be awarded to up to two innovators, who also get residency at the Seoul Bio Hub plus mentoring and coaching from experts at Johnson & Johnson.
The True Colours Trust: Small Grants Programme (Africa)
Deadline: 4 September
Grants of up to £5,000 for small, locally-based organisations improving standards of palliative care across Africa. Applications for this round of funding are accepted for work that helps services to respond to Covid-19. Up to 10% of the maximum grant amount can be used for core/administration costs.
Council of Europe: Human Trafficking Call for Proposals (Europe)
Deadline: 11 September
NGOs in a Council of Europe member state are eligible to apply funding (up to €20,000) to prevent trafficking of human beings and help those vulnerable to trafficking in the specific context of Covid-19. Total fund size €80,000. Projects to be implemented by May 2021.
Arts and Humanities Research Council: Urgency Grants Scheme – people with disabilities (Global)
Deadline: 22 September
Funding of up to £100,000 available for innovation awards or case studies on the impacts of Covid-19 on people with disabilities; focus on low- and middle-income countries. Proposals accepted only from lower or middle-income country principal investigators from an organisation that leads or has previously led UKRI grants as the lead research organisation.
Junction: Covid-19 Humanitarian Grants (Europe)
Deadline: Ongoing
Grants for humanitarian aid projects run by young Jewish adults (20-40 years old) throughout Europe. Applicants must be a registered organisation or have a fiscal sponsor that is registered, with some connection to the Jewish community. Applications reviewed on a rolling basis, with a two-week turnaround period.
For UK and Ireland organisations
Social Enterprise Support Fund (England)
Deadline: 20 August (may close earlier, depending on demand); round 3 open 10-17 September
Emergency grants for social enterprises based in England, at least one year old, incorporated as a social purpose organisation with an asset lock, and with pre-Covid annual income of £25,000- £1.5m. Applicants should rely on trading income for their sustainability and either support people with high risk of Covid-19, or those likely to face increased challenges as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. Round 1 applicants cannot reapply, unless specifically asked to do so.

Global Fund for Children/National Lottery Community Fund: Phoenix Fund (England)
Deadline: 21 August
£1m in emergency grants (up to £20,000 each) to support Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) charities and groups in England with a turnover up to £100,000, “working in the heart of their communities, providing essential and emergency services, support, and education tailored to the BAME community”. Covers core funding, and is open to unconstituted groups.
Department for Communities/National Lottery Community Fund: Covid-19 charities fund (Northern Ireland)
Deadline: 24 August
Grants of up to £75,000 available from the government’s £15.5m fund for charities based in Northern Ireland, established pre-March 2020, and facing severe hardship due to Covid-19. The fund will not support new programmes or costs associated with ongoing activity that can be suspended.
Deadline: 31 August
Grants of £1,000-£3,000, plus one year of support, available for UK-based Black-led organisations creating impact in Black deprived communities, or providing services to people severely impacted by Covid in terms of physical or mental health or financially. Particular interest in supporting organisations that have not previously received funding for their work.
Rethink Ireland: Equality Fund 2020-23 (Ireland)
Deadline: 14 September
A €3m fund for organisations and groups (nonprofit legal form required) that empower marginalised communities and tackle systemic inequality, with three focus areas: empowering women, strengthening communities and promoting equality. Fund offers cash grants of €55,000-€75,000 each year for three years.
Architectural Heritage Fund: Transformational Project Grants (England)
Deadline: 30 September
For projects that will contribute to the transformation of high streets and town centres in England, helping them become thriving places, strengthening local communities and encouraging local economies to prosper. Grants available to help with assessing the viability of a project, or to help fund development costs or to match funds raised through crowdfunding and community shares.
Lloyds Bank Foundation: New Fund (England and Wales)
Deadline: Ongoing
A Covid recovery fund offering 150 charities a two-year, unrestricted grant of £50,000 plus access to support for organisational and service delivery adaptations. Qualifying charities must have an income of £25,000-£1m, be based in England or Wales, and have experience of tackling issues such as mental health, homelessness and domestic abuse.
